During the summer of , after Richard suffered a heart attack, the family moved from their house on Robin Avenue to a home on Howard Avenue.

Defendant's abuse, torture, and starvation of Jeanette intensified at that residence. Jeanette lost weight and sustained serious physical injuries, some of which became infected.

In early December, Jeanette suffered a significant blow to her head, after which she appeared confused and had difficulty walking or standing.

On December 9, , Jeanette fell asleep on the floor and became unresponsive. Defendant and Richard placed Jeanette in the bathtub and called Richard's mother, who told them to call 9—1—1.

Richard then called 9—1—1. Emergency responders arrived and rushed Jeanette to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Given the severity of Jeanette's prolonged starvation, dehydration, physical injuries and localized infections, authorities were unable to pinpoint a single cause of death.

Before leaving the hospital, defendant and Richard privately discussed assigning blame to Richard and the possibility that authorities might impose a lighter sentence on him as a result of his heart condition.

At the sheriff's office, detectives separated the couple, read them their Miranda rights, and interviewed them. Defendant also initially assigned blame to Richard, but then later made self-incriminating statements.

Born on August 9, , Jeanette Maples spent six of her seven years of life in foster care before being returned to her mother.

According to interviews with family members, Angela began abusing Jeanette soon after the two were reunited. Angela McAnulty was born on October 2, , in California.

When Angela was five years old, her mother was murdered and Angela spent her remaining childhood years living with her father and two brothers.

McAnulty's father was abusive, often withholding food from the children as a form of punishment. At the age of 16, McAnulty became involved with a carnival worker and left home.

It was during this time that she became involved with drugs. She later met Anthony Maples and had three children, two boys, Anthony Jr.

Maples and McAnulty were incarcerated on drug charges and the three children were placed in foster care. McAnulty regained custody of only Jeanette in after she was released from jail.

The boys had sent letters to a judge requesting to stay in foster care rather than be returned to their abusive mother. Last edited: Oct 7, During a sentencing trial, prosecutors had presented gruesome evidence that investigators had found the blood of teenager Jeanette Maples in every room of the home and that her mother had forced her to sleep on cardboard and denied her food while her two siblings sat at the table and ate.

McAnulty also used a vacuum cleaner to drown out the sound of the beatings she gave her daughter, prosecutors said. The emaciated girl was found unconscious in a bathtub at the home in , and she died later that night.

Then you realize while reading this story that Jeanette was actually living in it. Pandorama Well-Known Member. What makes me sad, is she was seven when returned to her mother, there would have been visits before that and she was probably treated lovingly during them to show authorities that reunification was best for her.

She might have been in a safe and caring foster family for those six years but she would have been tremendously excited to go back to her 'real mom' who was so nice to her and wanted her back so much.

And I bet the bad treatment started as soon as she was back and authorities satisfied she had integrated well. Maybe a few months. She would have been horribly confused and desperate to please and get the loving mother from the visits back.

She was just a little girl, with the little girl dream of being loved by her 'real mom'. Who was actually a monster.

Maybe Janette's spirit will live on to protect other vulnerable children. A list of questions to spark the conversation: Why did the system fail to protect her?

Does DHS need better funding and more staff? Why was age a consideration in letting her "fend for herself"? How does an abused, trapped, starving child "fend for herself"?

Do the policies and practices of DHS need to be changed? Why aren't all calls to DHS recorded and investigated? An abused child may be afraid to talk about their parents or may think they are a bad child.

How can a child with life long abuse know where to turn? Do officials recognize the child may not be willing to implicate the parent for fear of retribution, no matter what age?

Isn't a black eye and busted lip sufficient evidence to suspect abuse when the child's explanation is "I fell out of bed" or "I ran into the door"?

Does the public school system have any policies re: abuse awareness education for children? If not, why? Don't we need to break the silence that enables abusers to continue?

Are posters clearly displayed at school stating the signs of abuse so everyone understands what it is? Does the State of Oregon promote public awareness about child abuse via ad campaigns such as they do with the Lottery?

Why is a parent with a history of abuse allowed to home school and isolate the very child who had been abused? When a child leaves the public school system does anyone know what happens to them or are they now invisible to us?

Keeping Janette's Memory Alive Please take a moment to leave a comment about Janette's life or your thoughts on how we can prevent more tragedies.

Your input is crucial in order for us to create a better safety net for children. She came to school with a black eye and told us all she fell off her bed.

I think she was scared of what people might think if she ever told anyone. After graduating from junior high school, she started being home schooled.

That's the last they ever saw of her. I would use my wings to fly home. Do not assume that someone else is watching out for the child. And keep dialing until someone listens to you!

Abuse happens when we remain silent, when we do nothing, when we avert our eyes…. Abused children do not know how to get help. Abused children are conditioned to believe they are bad.

You were the ones that should have loved me Yet, you are my worst enemies.

McAnulty is among 30 people on death row. Executions have been put on hold ever since then-Gov. John Kitzhaber instituted a moratorium in Kate Brown extended it during her tenure.

According to prosecutors, McAnulty singled out Jeanette to beat and starve while allowing her other two children to sit at a table to eat dinner and watch TV or play video games.

The teenager suffered open wounds so deep that one of them exposed her hip bones, prosecutors said, and her only possession was a piece of cardboard she used for a bed.

Jeanette Maples was 15 when she was found dead in her Eugene home. Submitted photo. She later wrote a letter to a school official, saying she was denied food at home, forced to eat chili peppers and ordered to sit on her knees for long periods as punishment.

The Oregon Department of Human Services investigated by visiting the home, but found it well stocked and closed the case without taking action to protect Jeanette.

McAnulty also pled guilty to altering and destroying evidence in the case. Angela McAnulty was born on October 2, , in California.

When she was 5 years old, her mother was murdered. She spent the remainder of her childhood living with her father and two brothers.

Her father was abusive, often withholding food from the children as a form of punishment. At the age of 16, McAnulty began a relationship with a carnival worker and left home.

It was during this time that she became involved with drugs. She later met Anthony Maples, with whom she had three children, two boys, Anthony Jr.

She also had another child, a daughter named Patience, by another father. When Maples and McAnulty were incarcerated on drug charges, the children were placed in foster care.

After her release from jail in , McAnulty regained custody of Jeanette and Patience. In , Angela met and married a long-haul truck driver named Richard McAnulty.

They had a son soon after the marriage. By October , the family relocated to Oregon, leaving Anthony Jr. The boys had sent letters to a judge requesting to stay in foster care rather than be returned to their abusive mother.

Born on August 9, , Jeanette Maples spent six of her first seven years in foster care prior to being returned to her mother.

According to interviews with family members, Angela began abusing Jeanette soon after the two were reunited. Described as a good child, Jeanette attended public school and took her studies seriously.

She was given perfect attendance awards in the seventh and eighth grade. However, in social interactions, Jeanette had a difficult time.

Sent to school wearing torn, dirty tops and worn-out sweatpants, she was sometimes teased by her classmates.

Despite her shyness, she managed to make a few friends, although she would only see them at school. Her mother did not allow her to invite friends to her home.

In , after a friend spotted several bruises on Jeanette during gym class, she admitted that her mother did not allow her to eat and that she was abused.

The friend told her parents and Child Protection Services CPS was contacted but the agency representatives were reluctant to respond to what they called "second-hand" information.

A teacher was contacted who spoke to Jeanette who again admitted to being abused. She said was terrified of her mother. The teacher contacted CPS and reported her concerns.

CPS went to the McAnulty home but closed the case after McAnulty denied abusing her daughter and blamed the accusations on Jeanette, whom she described as a compulsive liar.

McAnulty subsequently pulled Jeanette out of school, saying that she was going to home school her daughter.

This left Jeanette completely isolated and greatly reduced any chances of her getting the help she so badly needed.

In another call was made to the CPS, this time by an anonymous caller who later turned out to be Lee McAnulty, Jeanette's grandmother.

She called CPS after seeing how grossly underweight Jeanette had become. The child also had a split lip, both conditions Angela McAnulty dismissed when it was suggested that she should take her daughter to a doctor.

Over the following months, Jeanette's grandmother called CPS several times but the agency did not follow up on the calls. Repeated calls by concerned individuals to the Oregon DHS to report the abuse were not investigated.

She slipped through the cracks in the system. I invite everyone who knew her to participate and share your stories of her life. Posted by jude at PM 2 comments:.

About this site This blog is dedicated to Janette Marie Maples, who was tortured to death at the age of 15 after years of parental abuse.

Despite concern from people who knew her and repeated phone calls to the authorities, her cries went unanswered. Janette was a caring person who loved to read and wanted to be a librarian someday.

She wrote in "hidden" diaries and had dreams of flying away to heaven. We will never know the extent of the pain she endured.

My hope is her heartbreaking story will inspire you to examine the current system of abuse reporting. It did not protect her. News links regarding her tragic death are posted on this site for your reference.

Updates will be added when available. Ask your state legislators, Governor and school district to help us correct the problem.

Maybe the end result will be a Janette Maples Law or Policy that ensures no other child will fall through such a very large crack in the system.
